ABSTRACT
The capital market is the backbone of a country’s economy, as it facilitates the mobilization of long-term financial resources and supports economic growth, particularly industrial development. After independence, the Government of India established several financial institutions such as IFCI, ICICI, UTI, SFCs, SIDCs, and IDBI to promote industrialization and strengthen the financial system. The establishment of OTCEI, mutual funds, venture capital funds, and later the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in 1992 played a significant role in improving transparency, investor protection, and the overall efficiency of the capital market. The liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991 and the entry of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) further accelerated the growth and integration of the Indian securities market with global financial markets.
