ABSTRACT
Language textbook is central to the instructional process of an English classroom. It acts as vehicle for the promotion of specific vision of curriculum. It contains not merely linguistic content or exercises, bur have powerful pedagogical and ideological connotations. The nature of content, organization of the textbook and suggested evaluation procedures reflect upon educational policies which are further tied to achieve broader educational and national goals. In this context, besides explicit aspect of a text book, the present study aims at investigating underlying objectives and principles of English text books being prescribed in the schools of Punjab which are affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).In this qualitative framework of study, the prescribed textbooks have been content analysed. The findings of the study reveal that the text books align with learning and pedagogical objectives laid down by NCF (2005).
